Go listen to Shostakovich. Go listen to Beethoven. Go listen to any Finale you can find. Pick up Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto in Bb and take a good look. Say it's relaxing and I'll pronounce you utterly unmusical.


I say, it's the other way around; popular songs are easier for people to relax to. And you want to talk about boring music? Fine. Your typical popular song is generally played by a band i.e. a drummer, one or two keyboardists, a bassist, and generally 1 or 2 guitarists. So much for variety. You can say the keyboard produces a lot of different sounds. But they will always be synthesised ones. You cannot replicate the sound of an orchestral instrument; it has its own character and timbre and electronic sounds simply won't beat the real thing. In classical music, you have arrangements from one up to a thousand musicians, and for instrument, you have violin, viola, cello, bass, piano, harpsichord, flute, clarinet, bassoon, double bassoon, tuba, euphonium, saxophone, horns(all the different varieties), timpani, xylophone, triangle, harp.


Just to name a few.


And the songs themselves? Truth is, popular songs have only one melody. And the singer takes that. Phrase ends, guitar picks up the melody, perhaps a solo here or there by one or other of the instruments, but that's that. And classical? You have multiple melodies going at the same time. Which means you're receiving a lot more information. And you can have different dynamic changes over these so some feature more prominently than others. Other instruments can pick up the line in the middle of the phrase. And there are generally no lyrics so you can go dig many different meanings out of the same song. Lyrics are so limiting. They have their uses in helping people identify with the songs, but sooner or later they get plain boring.


And to the one who said "Musicians are useless because they don't contribute anything to the economy," you're a bloody fucking materialistic asshole.


Chinese Orch's recruitment poster for the Sec 1s said: "Music makes the man." That is true. And I say, music makes not only the one man, but is a part of the identity of the race of Man. It reflects the animal part of Man, but is also a symbol of our progress as a race. And in the midst of music you see the emotions, the stories, the reflections of humanity.


This is my opinion; it's debatable. As far as you don't get to the point of discriminating against classical music(as most people do) or saying that there's no point in music. Music is my life and I think, it's a hell of a lot more interesting than the lives that some people lead. Not giving any examples here.
